Dapper MC
James Leach a.k.a. MC Dapper was born 11th of February 1979 in Reading, England.
After finding a love for Rave music in the early days of 1992-93, Dapper has always found the Jungle sound one that he can move to. “ It started off as a young raver traveling around the U.K to all different raves and events, places like Dreamscape, Jungle Splash, Helter skelter and Nitrous, I always loved the music and loved the MC’s , they always gave me that extra lift at a party, and I thought Mmmmm !! that’s what I want to do “
After starting to write my own lyrics and playing at a few local events in and around the Reading area I re-located to Amsterdam in the Netherlands through my work in 1999 and propelled myself into the depths of the Dutch/European Drum and Bass scene.
When I moved to Holland I called myself MC Dapper and the reason behind this new found identity was that it means ‘brave’ in Dutch and that was going to be the key to my success
Bravery and courage
I was in a Drum and Bass club in Holland one week and heard what I thought was a ' wack MC ' and decided to take over the show that night... “ That was in 1999 and I decided to have a go, it was the first time I had held a MIC in front of 500 people and it was an experience, that only made me more hungry to go on and achieve more, read on “
Considering Dapper had never held a MIC before in front of this many people he held himself up very well and was asked back to play at the Mazzo, which is a weekly D&B night in Amsterdam. After playing here for a couple of weeks, he was approached by one of the promoters of another successful D&B night in Holland called 'Retox'. His first performance was on the 15-04-2001 and it was with Bad Company. He recalls: ”It was a wicked night, some 800 heads were going crazy”
Having played in virtually every city in Holland with a Rollercoaster Tour in 2001, he has found other international success in Belgium, Germany, UK, Czech, France, Israel. His earliest residency was at the Retox in Amsterdam, but now has residencies at other major drum and bass events such as Supersonic, Ignition and is a regular player at the Forms events in Arnhem, and now playing at events hosting 2000 ravers such as Major League in Rotterdam – this is what I wanted….
After working hard on my own style and lyrics I was voted the Number 1 MC in the Dutch drum and bass awards 2002 and this was the highlight of my career so far. After this period I have also found myself playing at some of the biggest raves in Europe, on stages like Kings of the Jungle (Manheim) and One Nation (Hamburg )– Germany, I also have bookings coming up in Austria, and I will be holding a residency in LA by the end of the year with the Bassground crew.
After growing up loving football and drum and bass Dappers words of wisdom are influenced by the great Liverpool manager Bill Shankly and they are “ drum and bass isn’t a matter of life and death it is more important than that “
In the coming months, Dapper aims to work closer with the American DnB community and travel more in the Drum and Bass worldÂ….
“I hope I can travel and educate as many people as possible about the music I love. It is, and will be the music of the future - and with the help and support of Bassground - who knows what can happen…”
Keep posted and watch out for this MC as he has many crowd controlling skills. After only 2 yearÂ’s in the business he is definitely got a bright future a head of him...
